Themeeting started with introductory address and welcome led by Prof. Kimani Njogu from Twaweza Communication. KNATCOM coordinator Mrs. Emily presented to us
· What the creative sector in Kenya constitutes.
· Function of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
· KNATCOM findings of the data on culture :
– Sources of data
– Interpretation of data
The function of KNATCOM is to analyze and put data together. They did their finding in some counties like Nakuru, Narok and Nairobi and it show that KNBS has no official data on culture from these counties. None of the data has ever been validated by the KNBS. The allocated budget by the government through the ministry is not shown.
UNESCOhelps build peace and sustainable development. This organization uses a pragmatic approach when measuring data. The core cultural domains are;Education, Production and consumption and archiving and preserving. We need to customize ourselves and appreciate our own culture or local culture, becausemany people depend on this cultural sector.
Prof.Kimani Njogu took us through the questionnaire for counties on cultural statistics. The questionnaire was to find out;
I. how much counties allocate to the culture industry
II. measure from revenues
III. measure from participation
IV. number of people engaged.
We were able to make corrections on the questionnaire before collection of data in counties started. Questions that were added on the questionnaire were;
I. Are there women or youths doing artistic jobs in your county?
II. Any unregistered or invisible artists?
It was agreed that KNATCOM should be able to provide the number of the countiesthat will agree to give data on the culture statistics by the end of the 1sthalf of the year.
